Under the system that started on November 1, 2026, you pay the price including tax, and the refund is the consumption tax part: 10/110 of the price for most goods and 8/108 for food and drinks. You need at least ¥5,000 before tax at one store on one day. Shops may deduct a fee, so you may receive less.

From November 1, 2026 you buy at the tax-included price, and the consumption tax is refunded after customs confirms the export when you leave, within 90 days of purchase. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax per store per day. Each shop sets its own refund method and timing.

Japan tax-free shopping changed on November 1, 2026: what tourists must do now

Since November 1, 2026, tax-free shops in Japan charge you the full price including consumption tax. You get that tax back later: scan your passport at a customs kiosk when you leave Japan, within 90 days of buying, before you hand your bags to the airline.
